There’s a fire near Slateport beach.

With the ranger headquarters being so close to the oceanfront, he had seen it clearly: the dark smoke rising in what otherwise should be a clear late summer day for the city. It’s coming from the harbour, and ironically enough, Tam had been smoking when he first saw it.
[break][break]
He only puts out the cigarette once at the scene, long after having called the incident in – he never has been one to care much for hurrying. Unlike most rangers, he’s clad in a suit, and the only thing that would identify him by his profession are the gold armband and badge he wears. Captain. But, captain or not, what can one man do to put out a fire?

Call out his Gyarados, of course.

”Take care of it.” Is the simple command he gives the pokémon, knowing fire fighters would arrive soon. With that said, Tam sets out to look for any curious civilians that might get a little too close, but for a second there, his gaze wanders back to the burning container.

Why would someone want cargo burned? Had this been Team Rocket’s doing?

When the alien pokemon arrives, it blinks its eyes at both Tam and his Gyarados. It does not attempt to deceive the two, and instead intends to utilize a water move through its ME FIRST move to spearhead the operation.

Katherine emerges only afterwards.

The Pheromosa stares at them and Tam stares back. He’s seen enough reports on Ultra Beasts to recognize it for what it is. For a short moment, he wonders if he’s going to have to deal with something even more annoying than a fire, but then Katherine Fairburne appears and it all makes perfect sense. The fact that he recognizes her is mostly because she seems to be the only Elite Four member that has been one for a while now. No wonder the Pheromosa is helping instead of trying to murder them.

”Help’s always welcome.” Tam shrugs, though he agrees that the fire is mostly handled. The Gyarados can take care of it easily enough, and from the looks of it, no one has gotten hurt or anything of the like.

”Though I think Team Rocket is be–”

He doesn’t get to finish the sentence.

An explosion comes from the burning container, surprising onlookers and the ranger captain alike. Okay, maybe the fire isn’t completely handled.

The explosion prompts Katherine to flutter her eyes a couple of times at the growing fire, almost as though half expecting something to step out of the flames. A pokemon, a demon, a dragon... but nothing comes.

She's not particularly surprised to see her Pheromosa utilize her ME FIRST ability to mimic the Gyarados' actions. Whatever water it intends to spew, she does first. Admittedly, it lacks some force due to the pokemon's lack of experience with the element, but she makes up for it with speed.

Tam is admittedly a little confused by her remark there, but within a second or two he makes the decision that he simply doesn’t care enough to question Katherine Fairburne’s words. He takes them for what they are and moves on. After all, he has always preferred it when things are simple.

The firemen are late, apparently, but between his Gyarados and Katherine’s Pheromosa, the situation should be handled in no time. Ultra Beasts really are a sight to see, huh? The only one Tam had seen working for a trainer before had been Raziel Beckett’s Buzzhole, and Pheromosa is like its complete opposite. Even he thinks they’re kind of cool.

”Oh yeah… Rocket. It doesn’t look like an accidental fire because of the way it’s burning, you know? Figured they might be behind it, since they’ve been damaging and stealing supplies lately.”

He shrugs, because chasing after Team Rocket for things like these is also technically not in his job description.

Pheromosa's orders remain the same, so she operates the same.

She takes the initiative each time the Gyarados appears to prepare a move, replicating it with a touch of her otherworldly finesse. Naturally, her execution of the move is faster-- although still lacking in some force.

"You don't think they'd prefer to steal supplies instead of just mindlessly burning them?" Katherine's not entirely convinced. Not yet, at least. Maybe after the fire is extinguished, they can check whether supplies were, in fact, stolen or not.

”Eh… Figured it might be something along the lines of ‘If we can’t take their supplies then let’s destroy them ‘cause fuck the League’ or something.” He shrugs yet again. ”Dunno. I’m not a criminal, no clue how they think, but I do know that that’s no accidental fire.”

Not with how quickly the supplies had gone up in flames, and also given that there’s no clear point of origin. Sure, some pokémon may have happened to accidentally use some really powerful fire move in the vicinity, that’s always a possibility, but Tam has his doubts. He’s been dealing with too many Rocket-related crimes recently.

Then again, Katherine also has a point.

Just as he says this, his Gyarados and the Ultra Beast seem to get the job done, for all signs of flame have faded and all that’s left behind is soaking burnt crates.

Contrary to the ranger, Katherine did have a clue or two about how criminals operated. She was fairly certain that some Rockets were equipped enough to handle a task such as this. Arceus knows she'd stolen plenty without ever burning down a place, and Giratina knows she prefers burning people, not places.

She sounds confused. "What do you mean 'all yours'? I'm not a detective, ranger boy. It's not really my job to investigate this thing." A snap of her fingers draws Pheromosa's attention, wordlessly gesturing for the Ultra Beast to return to her trainer's side.

She's not all too keen about staying around to mingle and get to know Tam.

”Yeah, soon.” Because the proper authorities should be arriving soon, obviously, but Tam doesn’t bother with explaining all of that. He had just intended on helping while waiting for firemen and Slateport PD to arrive, and apparently Katherine Fairburne had had the same idea.

He looks at her, and while some people would perhaps be intimidated by Elite Four herself and the tall Ultra Beast by her side, his expression remains neutral. Tam may just be too impassive for his own good.

”Hm. It sounded like you wanted to have a better look, but I guess not.” He shrugs, and it’s then that police sirens interrupt their conversation.

He could offer to be the one to stay and give the report on what happened, but honestly, that sounds annoying, like too much work, and also like a waste of his time. So, he decides to act before Katherine can beat him to the punch:

Calling his Gyarados back, he starts to walk away from the scene and back to Slateport Ranger HQ.
